Kagutsuchi (カグツチ) is the kami of fire and lord of blacksmiths in the Shinto mythology. His mother Izanami burned to death whilst birthing him, thus his father Izanagi beheaded him with the sword Ame no Ohabari (天之尾羽張) and diced his corpse into eight pieces, each of which molded into a volcano.

In this concept, the blacksmiths of the Sagami Province have unearthed the flame god's bones and reforged them into a form of great destructive capacity. Those who witnessed its radiance for themselves have written that a hint of Kagutsuchi's power is restored within the axe. Should he who wields it call forth the will of fire, his shall be the title of "Ash-Breather" until his passing... or so the annals tell us.

Where the divine weapon is now, however, the blacksmiths cannot say, but fickle oni who stalk the shadows are wont to whisper of a bright blade which has been tempering for centuries in the dark waters of Yomi, the underworld, where Izanami roams among the dead.
